This Patent Attorney will help in development, protection, and management of Regeneron's valuable intellectual property pertaining to genetics. This new and unique in–house opportunity will be a part of a team devoted to one of the world's largest human genomic sequencing efforts at the Regeneron Genetics Center, which focuses on early gene discovery and functional genomics. The position will protect innovations, including nucleic acid therapeutics, precision medicine, and human genetics models; all derived from cutting edge genetics science and over 120 scientific collaborations worldwide. You will also advise on emerging legal issues, including monitoring and reviewing case law and legislative developments. A typical day may include:
- Working together with world–class scientists at the Regeneron Genetics Center to identify new inventions stemming from human genetics research;
- Attending lab meetings and meeting with scientists to track new developments and determine whether and when to pursue formal IP protection;
- Preparing and prosecuting worldwide patent application portfolios relating to nucleic acid therapeutics such as siRNA, relating to personalized medicine modalities, and relating to animal models of human genetics;
- Maintaining a competitive intelligence platform by conducting patent landscape overviews, freedom to operate analyses, and validity assessments of third party IP in relation to new drug targets and nucleic acid therapeutics identified by the Regeneron Genetics Center;
- Supporting due diligence projects, agreements and transactions relating to over 120 research and development collaborations with the Regeneron Genetics Center ;
- Collaborating with research program managers, alliance managers, and business development teams in managing the Regeneron Genetics Center's intellectual property in research and development collaborations;
- Providing training and education programs to help scientists protect Regeneron's intellectual property; and
- Staying abreast of US and international legislative developments impacting the protection of genetics innovations, and advising senior attorneys and scientists of these developments, their potential impact, and how to navigate them.

- At least 6 years of legal experience at a law firm and/or in–house, including biotech/pharmaceutical and/or health care experience.
- JD with excellent law school credentials;
- Licensed to practice law in New York or be eligible for licensure as a registered in–house counsel;
- Licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
To be considered for this role you must possess
Ph.D. in life sciences (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, immunology or related disciplines) is required;
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school;
Admitted to practice before the USPTO and licensed to practice law in at least one state (member of the NY bar or eligible for in–house licensure in NY);
4–8 years of experience in a law firm setting (with or without corporate law department experience) preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the biological arts;
Strong organizational skills and ability to lead multiple projects and contending priorities;
Ability to manage a large and complex docket with minimal supervision;
Exceptional communication skills, including presentation, interpersonal, writing and conflict resolution.
Salary Range (annually)
$193,200.00 – $322,000.00
