Prudential is seeking a highly talented, business savvy and experienced attorney to join the Legal team as the Chief Legal Officer for its subsidiary, Assurance IQ ("Assurance"). With Prudential's acquisition of Assurance in 2019, this position is a unique opportunity that combines the ability to work in a young, innovative start–up with the support and strength of an over 140–year–old financial services company.

What you'll do in this role:

As Chief Legal Officer for Assurance, you will lead and develop a team responsible for handling a full range of legal matters that arise in connection with the lead generation, marketing, sale, and distribution of life, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, health, and property and casualty products through a direct–to–consumer platform. You will need to be comfortable working in a wide variety of legal disciplines, including marketing, employment, privacy, intellectual property, litigation, regulatory affairs, contracts, and corporate law. It is unlikely that any two days will be the same in this role.

You should expect to work with and advise senior leadership, as well as a variety of other business partners including product managers, data scientists, engineers, marketers, and compliance officers on everything from the addition of new products or features on the platform to digital marketing initiatives to new regulatory obligations; support complaint handling and litigation matters; and track and advise on emerging legal and regulatory issues that could impact Assurance.

In this role, you also will manage outside counsel relationships, as well as work closely and collaboratively with subject matter experts across our parent company's Law, Compliance, Business Ethics, and External Affairs team.

This role is an ideal opportunity to help shape the future of insurance and personal finance.

To be successful in this role, you must possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of law firm, regulatory or in–house law department experience as an attorney.

  • Relevant knowledge of and experience with the laws and regulations governing insurance distribution, particularly with regard to life, health, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and/or property and casualty insurance products.

  • Exemplary leadership skills with a capacity to easily partner and collaborate with business, legal, compliance and other corporate partners, including both senior management and technical experts.

  • Superior analytical skills.

  • An ability to write and communicate clearly and simply in providing focused, technically–sound and actionable legal solutions.

  • Courage and confidence to speak up, challenge and advocate for a point of view respectfully.

  • An ability to engage in intelligent risk taking and show excellent judgment in comfortably making clear, rational and timely decisions in the best interests of Prudential and our customers despite ambiguity, complexity, and an ever–evolving regulatory environment.

  • Strong work–ethic, with an ability to work independently and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast–paced environment.

  • Intellectual curiosity and an appetite for learning new legal disciplines and business areas outside your current areas of experience.

  • J D degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in at least one state, and ability to become admitted to the limited practice of law as House Counsel in the State of Washington, if not admitted to the bar in that state, within the required timeframe.

Note: Prudential is required by state specific laws to include the salary range for this role when hiring a resident in applicable locations. The salary range for this role is from $235,500.00 to $318,600.00. Specific pricing for the role may vary within the above range based on many factors including geographic location, candidate experience, and skills. Roles may also be eligible for additional compensation and/or benefits. Eligibility to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance. In addition, employees are eligible for standard benefits package including paid time off, medical, dental and retirement.
