Overview:

Seneca is a nonprofit mental health agency with a broad continuum of care including mental health, education, permanency, and juvenile justice programs designed to meet the holistic needs of children and families. Since Seneca was founded in 1985, we have used the lessons we have learned supporting youth facing profound challenges to reshape systems and build programs that can both reach young people at the first sign of struggle and unconditionally serve youth with the most acute and extraordinary needs.

Our agency is also committed to informing and improving the local, state and federal systems that serve children and families. Seneca's broad geographic range and continuum of services position the agency as a leader in shaping public policy. This work takes many forms: local county–level advocacy; tracking or sponsoring statewide legislation; participation in statewide advisory councils; developing partnerships or coalitions to advance innovative systems–change ideas, and more.

We are seeking a proactive and analytical General Counsel to provide guidance and advice regarding all legal matters and risks. The General Counsel will advise agency leadership in order to achieve the best legal outcomes, examine and draft contracts and business agreements, and craft Seneca's legal strategies. The General Counsel will ensure legal compliance, maintain Seneca's legal documents, and oversee Seneca's copyrights and trademarks. To ensure success in this role, you will have sound knowledge and understanding of applicable laws and regulations, and the ability to make prudent legal decisions.

This position can be 100% remote, but requires California state licensure to practice law.

Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice and direction to agency leadership on new laws, existing laws and legal rights that would impact functionality of the organization and the youth and families served
Research a broad range of laws and regulations affecting the organization, including but not limited to federal and state laws and regulations affecting healthcare facilities, government contracts, compliance, and labor and employment
Draft, negotiate and review contracts and legal documents, and prepare legal memoranda as needed
Oversee the legal matters of the business as a while, including acting as Seneca's legal representative
Maintain knowledge of the agency's legal documents and operations
Craft and review legal strategy in response to any litigation
Keep a record of all legal documents and proceedings for the organization
Facilitate filings of licensing forms and other statutory requirements
Manage and coordinate with outside counsel as needed
Legally file for copyright of intellectual property
Qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and member in good standing of the State Bar of California
Knowledge of statutes, rules and regulations, and federal, state, city and county measures that could impact the operations of the organization
Proven record of negotiation and litigation skills, including formulating and executing legal strategies
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Commitment to social justice and advancing equity
TB test clearance, fingerprinting clearance, and all other state/federal licensing or certification requirements
Proof of COVID–19 vaccination
Schedule:
10–15 hours per week

Starting at $69 – $76 per hour, commensurate with experience
