Merck & Co., Inc., located in Rahway, New Jersey, USA, has an immediate opening for a Trademark Paralegal Manager (hybrid) to manage a team of paralegals and to provide support with matters relating to worldwide trademark filing programs, trademark prosecution and maintenance for a large trademark portfolio as well as certain departmental functions. The position will be hybrid with a home base at the company’s Rahway campus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manages a team of paralegals and paralegal performance Trains and develops paralegal team Manages vendor relationships Assists in streamlining processes and procedures for trademark group Manages distribution and caseload among paralegals Coordinates with attorneys on special requests or complex projects Manages global recording projects Assists in creating and reporting budgeting for trademark team Independently handles legal and/or factual research as appropriate, conducts US and international searches Preparation and filing of US trademark prosecution documents Works with local counsel regarding international prosecution Manages deadlines for US and international prosecution portfolio Assists with copyright permissions; and other trademark-related activities Assists with parallel import notifications Reviews, drafts and/or develops simple legal documents and communications, and contributes to the review and/or drafting of complex legal documents and communications. Assists trademark attorneys in various trademark legal tasks, provides preliminary review of watch notices Develops and/or supports the development of initiatives to streamline processes and tools Handles legal review of non-legal documents for compliance with company policies (e.g. promotional materials, marketing programs) with attorney supervision Manages existing and navigates new working relationships with stakeholders. Contacts business domestic and international colleagues regarding trademark matters Provides support for trademark enforcement matters Completes intricate data and fact analysis and interprets results to fulfill business and legal needs, demonstrates due diligence. Determines advice on routine matters independently and responds to questions and inquiries involving moderately complex legal issues under direction of attorney Delivers concise legal documents and communications to internal business partners with support of attorney as appropriate

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School degree required Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, or Paralegal certificate preferred

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years trademark paralegal experience.

Skills:

  • Demonstrates substantive knowledge of legal principles, strategies and technology, advisory skills Ability to independently handle routine legal issues/documents with employees and third parties under direction of attorney Ability to independently develop solutions for business issues with minimal supervision/support. Accuracy & attention to detail in analyses and communications, ability to handle large caselo Ability to speak and write clearly and succinctly, ability to craft effective communications, including on complex legal issues, ability to emphasize key points and ideas. Effective time management to meet deadlines including project management skills, prioritization, consistent delivery of commitments and organize, build upon ideas of others. Autonomy on routine tasks as well as ability to recognize need for and seek further direction of attorney. Discrete in handling sensitive and confidential information, high level of integrity. Clear motivation and focus on achieving measurable, tangible results Willingness to adopt change Solid interpersonal and teamwork skills Advanced Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Under New York City, Colorado State, Washington State, and California State law, the Company is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this job. Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate’s relevant skills, experience, and education.

Expected salary range: $88,480.00 - $139,100.00

Available benefits include bonus eligibility, health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and sick days.
