Core Responsibilities:
- Drafts new patent applications, including evaluating new invention disclosures, in the food science and industrial technology spaces, which extends to assessing patentability of such inventions as well as agreeing with the business the geographies in which to pursue such applications
- Actively prosecute and maintain a global patent portfolio through direct interactions with the IP legal attorneys and paralegals as well as R&D product development teams, including prosecuting domestic patent applications before the USPTO as well as coordinating reexaminations, IPRs, invalidation actions, appeals, and oppositions, including assessing and developing the associated strategies
- Actively engage with the business and R&D teams to develop, implement and manage IP strategies for products in development, including freedom to operate assessments and patent filing strategies, as well as IP strategies associated with Ingredion's existing portfolio of products.
- Aligning the global patent portfolio with key strategic business drivers and provide client counseling on IP matters, including when to patent, publish, or maintain as a trade secret.
- Collaborate with the business. R&D team, and in–house IP attorneys on IP provisions in commercial, confidentiality, material transfer, joint development and IP license agreements
- Liaise with foreign agents and in–house IP attorneys to facilitate the preparation, prosecution and filing of new patent applications
- Support IP due diligence of third–party IP assets, including messaging to senior management
- Help develop and implement IP best practices, policies, and procedures.
- Must be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office
- Must have 8+ years of combined law–firm and corporate legal experience preparing and prosecuting domestic and international patent applications, preferably in the chemical, biotechnology, and/or food science related arts, including developing and implementing patent filing and prosecution strategies; providing patentability, validity, and freedom–to–operate assessments; and drafting IP provisions contained in various agreements.
- BS, MS, or PhD degree in chemistry or related scientific field. Subject matter expertise in the areas of biotechnology, hydrocolloids, food research, and food applications is a plus.
- Experience using online databases (e.g. USPTO, Epoline, Questel Orbit, etc), and internet resources is required.
- Must be proficient using Excel, MS word, Powerpoint, and Adobe.
