About this Position:

The Patent Engineer helps to develop and protect Honda's intellectual property. The Patent Engineer has the required scientific and technical background to search for prior art, file patents, and revise rejected patent applications, and recommend whether it's best to abandon an application. In this way, the Patent Engineer has similar qualifications and proficiencies to a patent attorney because they both have comprehensive knowledge of the regulations covering the patent application process and are able to file patents at the Patent Office.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with inventors to expand or adapt their ideas to the broadest extent possible and evaluate their inventions for patentability, perform and review patent searches and prepare opinion reports, including patentability analysis, and infringement and invalidity analysis under the guidance of an attorney
  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications and all tasks related to managing the assigned portfolio of patent applications through the patent offices
  • Business liaison and outreach for clients in specialized areas to understand and encourage submission of inventions, ensure compliance with freedom to practice and supporting IP workflow
  • Manage portfolio of issued patents, including value analysis and recommendations for annuities and awards and evaluate them for potential commercialization opportunities
  • Evaluate research, development, manufacturing and sales projects for potential patentability or clearance necessity, patent landscapes, and licensing
  • Who we are seeking:

    Required Work Experience:

  • 5 years+ of experience in the patent prosecution area in a law firm or corporate law department
  • Required Education:

  • BA/BS in Business, engineering, computer science, physics, or other applicable scientific discipline

    Total Rewards:

  • Competitive Base Salary: $77,800 to $116,700
  • o Pay will be based on several variables that include, but not limited to geographic location, work experience, education, etc.
