Overview

The Employment Attorney serves the legal needs of Getty by completing legal assignments of a difficult and occasionally controversial nature, including reviewing and drafting contracts, providing legal advice, reviewing proposed and existing legislation, reviewing and approving public statements, and guarding against legal risks involving the institution.


Responsibilities

  • Serve as the key legal advisor on labor and employment law and employee relations matters.
  • Applies extensive knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of the legal field.
  • Prepares and reviews contracts involving procuring goods and services, leases, licenses, real estate, and insurance; knowledge of land use law and copyright and trademark law preferred but not required.
  • Provide legal advice on employee relations matters, including but not limited to wage–hour compliance, workplace accommodations, compliance with employment and business policies, and disciplinary issues.
  • Work with Human Resources and management to help minimize legal exposure. This will include but is not limited to proactive review of employment policies (taking into account business objectives and practicalities); advice on policies, procedures, handbooks, and agreements; preparation of legal documents, memoranda, and other forms of communication regarding legal advice.
  • Assist in review of employment policies and procedures, including employee handbook, to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Handle pre–litigation claims, settlement negotiations and mediations, and federal and state litigation, including management of outside counsel as necessary.
  • Represent Getty in matters before federal and state agencies, including California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), EEOC, DOL, etc.
  • Manage outside employment counsel to efficiently deliver legal services and oversee outside counsel staffing, case strategy, and budget.
  • Stay current on changes in employment laws and regulations, conduct legal research, and share information on complex employment law issues.

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials
  • 5–7 years of employment legal experience

  • Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings and of laws, regulations, and rules related to the institution.
  • Broad and deep employment law knowledge; ability to readily advise on the wide variety of employment law issues that arise in a complex, global corporate environment.
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex issues and evaluate their broader implications for the business; interact with clients at all levels; provide timely, practical legal advice and solutions; and communicate effectively in person and in writing.
  • Skill in legal research, writing, and analysis; in using a computer and applicable software; in using reasoning and logic; in identifying and solving complex problems; in prioritizing workloads; and in using judgment to identify courses of action.
  • Ability to prepare opinions and briefs, to conduct research, to summarize findings, to interpret and apply laws, to use legal reference materials, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and take responsibility for issues and matters
  • Exemplary leadership and organization skills, including prioritization and time management.
  • Ability and willingness to develop expertise in other topics to meet the needs of Getty's legal department.
  • Demonstrated integrity and ability to foster trust and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with not–for–profit organizations.
