The Sr. Patent Counsel is responsible for partnering with R&D, manufacturing and other business and legal stakeholders to develop and execute strategies to protect and perfect Cepheid's intellectual property. The role will help encourage and sustain innovation across Cepheid.

This position is part of the legal department and will be located in Sunnyvale, CA. At Cepheid, our vision is to be the leading provider of seamlessly connected diagnostic solutions.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Integrate with R&D teams to learn about our manufacturing processes and identify key IP opportunities while enabling innovative protection strategies.
  • Provide a full range of patent support functions, including patent preparation and prosecution freedom–to–operate studies (e.g., infringement and validity analysis), and client counseling.
  • Provide direction to outside counsel on patent filing and prosecution matters globally.
  • Prepare and present training materials to business stakeholders to bolster invention disclosure, trade secret protection, and intellectual property protection efforts.
  • Educate and advise Cepheid associates on intellectual property issues.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Juris Doctor with excellent academic credentials from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to applicable state bar, registration as in–house counsel, or ability to gain admission or registration within 90 days.
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Patent and experience in patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Minimum of 4+ years of legal experience in the life sciences field in a law firm and/or in–house. Significant experience with trade secrets, transactions in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry advising clients on both business and legal issues strongly preferred.
  • A bachelor's degree with 12+ years of related work experience in a biological science, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, or other field relevant to life sciences or the medical diagnostic industry with preference for an advanced degree

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Ability to manage and serve a wide range of clients within the company by recognizing and responding quickly and pragmatically to urgent situations and clients.
  • Cost conscious, proactively manages matter budgets, and will drive strategies to minimize outside counsel spend without sacrificing quality of work product.
  • Prior experience developing or implementing trade secret policies and procedures.

The salary range for this role is 165,400–260,000 annually . This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
