Reporting to the Director of Legal Affairs, the Internal Legal Counsel will play a critical role in providing legal guidance and support to the organization. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with laws and regulations, manage legal contracts, and offer risk assessments. They will play a crucial role in safeguarding the organization's legal interests and intellectual property.

Internal Legal Counsel for Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami will be vital for protecting the organization from potential legal liabilities, supporting corporate governance, and maintaining a strong legal foundation for the organization's activities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Provide accurate and timely legal counsel to ITK on a wide range of legal topics, including contractual matters, corporate governance, and risk management
  • Liaise with and supervise external counsel for outsourced legal matters, ensuring efficient and cost–effective legal representation when required
  • Identify and communicate impacts to Inuit of proposed laws, regulations or policies
  • Develop legal arguments to support Inuit interests or concerns with laws, regulations, programs or policies
  • Define and implement internal governance policies to ensure ITK's processes and practices are in full compliance with relevant laws and regulations
  • Create, review, and negotiate various legal documents, such as agreements, terms & conditions, privacy policies, and other contractual arrangements
  • Collaborate cross–functionally with all teams within (and outside of) the organization, and provide legal guidance where needed
  • Ensure organization meets legal compliance standards
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Communicate complex legal concepts in a clear and concise manner, balancing legal considerations with ITK's objectives
  • Guide management through litigation processes when required
  • Support Executive, Policy Advancement and Corporate Services with legal analysis of proposed initiatives, upon request
  • Provide expert analysis and support in relation to Parliamentary appearances
  • Report regularly to the Director of Legal Affairs
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Five to seven years of practice experience in Indigenous Legal Issues, and the requisite knowledge, skills, and professional requirements to demonstrate elevated competence in this area
  • In–depth understanding of Inuit governance structures, and Inuit Treaty Organizations
  • Knowledge of Inuit treaties, Section 35 rights and Canadian Constitutional law
  • Knowledge of practice issues within Inuit Nunangat and Inuit customary law
  • Knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • Strong judgement, critical thinking analytical, and problem–solving abilities
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills (primarily in English; Inuktitut and/or French an asset)
  • Ability to work co–operatively and effectively with a variety of individuals and groups
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access), trouble shooting, Internet e–mail
OTHER INFORMATION
  • Work is complex, often managing several important processes, with many working groups concurrently
  • Direction will be provided by the Director of Legal Affairs
  • The consequence of errors will impact on organizational success
