Job Purpose
We have an exciting new role available for an experienced legal professional who would act as General Counsel. Whilst the role is based in the UK (2–3 days per week in our Godalming or London office as necessary), it would involve providing significant legal support across our globally expanding business.
The successful candidate will report into the CFO and work primarily with the Sales Team to negotiate and close new business contracts, covering the full range of Unily products and services. The General Counsel will also have an opportunity to get involved in more strategic work in the department, including assisting with potential M&A transactions as well as more tactical areas. They will resolve contentious matters, manage compliance audits and grow the team and processes to scale with the business.
The successful candidate will be someone who is ambitious, thrives when working at pace and is comfortable taking the initiative, being proactive, clear, and commercial in supporting the business, while effectively prioritising multiple types of work. Reporting into the role is the Commercial Contracts Team as well as the Data Privacy and Governance Team.
Main Responsibilities
- Delivering first–class legal support to the Sales Team and the broader business, acting as a pragmatic, "trusted advisor"
- Advising on contentious matters
- Facilitating the integration of companies and assets acquired by Unily
- Advising on the development of new products, including compliance–by–design
- Advising on a varied range of compliance issues (principally data protection in the context of new product development and SaaS contracts)
- Delivering internal training to the Sales Team on key concepts in commercial contracts and data protection.
- Ensuring Unily continues to be compliant within all legal jurisdictions, raising recommendations where required and formulating action plans internally on corporate transactions
- Support executive deliverables such as Board Reviews, Executive QBRs, strategic planning, and more as needed
- Build, develop and manage a diverse team of high–performing individuals
- Build and maintain a world–class, inclusive, diverse, high–performing team by driving effective onboarding, on–going training, retention embracing the Unily culture and values
Requirements
- 8+ years of relevant legal experience
- Qualified Solicitor in the UK or other similar jurisdiction
- Prior legal experience with GDPR required.
- Prior legal experience with SaaS agreements desired.
- Experience with intellectual property licensing advantageous
- Must be able to work in a fast–paced environment, shift priorities on little notice and remain flexible to changing business needs.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively advocate for your client's needs.
- Ability to thrive in an ambiguous environment with a high degree of autonomy
- Ability to build productive and positive relationships across the organization at all levels
- Excellent communication skills, particularly with executive–level partners
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
